Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents.

History

The field of AI research was founded at a workshop held on the campus of Dartmouth College during the summer of 1956.[1] Those who attended would become the leaders of AI research for decades.

Early AI programs focused on problem-solving and symbolic methods. The term "artificial intelligence" was coined by John McCarthy in 1956.[2]

Types of AI

Narrow AI

Also known as Weak AI, this type of AI is designed and trained for a particular task. Virtual personal assistants, such as Apple's Siri, are a form of narrow AI.

General AI

Also known as Strong AI or AGI, this refers to a machine with the ability to apply intelligence to any problem, rather than just one specific problem. This remains largely theoretical.[3]

Applications

AI is used in a variety of fields including:

  • Healthcare - diagnosis and drug discovery
  • Finance - fraud detection and algorithmic trading
  • Transportation - autonomous vehicles
  • Entertainment - recommendation systems and game AI

Ethics and Safety

AI safety is a growing concern as systems become more capable. Key issues include:

  • Bias in AI systems
  • Privacy concerns
  • Autonomous weapons
  • Job displacement
"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race."
— Stephen Hawking
